Adam O’Neil, PhD

Adam O’Neil

Licensed Clinical Facilitator & Founder of The Clearing

  • Dr. Adam O'Neil (he/him) is a licensed clinical psychologist based in Boulder, Colorado, where he serves as both a traditional therapist and a licensed Clinical Facilitator of natural medicine (psilocybin therapy). With a PhD in clinical psychology and two master's degrees—one in sport and performance psychology from the University of Denver and another in clinical psychology—Adam brings exceptional depth to his practice.

As an active sport and performance psychologist, Adam has worked with a variety of high-performing teams and organizations over the years, helping athletes and executives unlock their potential and navigate the unique pressures of peak performance. This specialized experience informs his broader clinical work, whether he's supporting someone through traditional therapy or guiding them through transformative psilocybin experiences.

Adam's clinical foundation was built through rigorous training, including his predoctoral internship at the University of Oklahoma's Health Sciences Center and a postdoctoral residency specializing in trauma-informed care for children and adolescents. He has pursued advanced training in psychedelic-assisted therapy, positioning him at the forefront of this emerging field as Colorado's most highly credentialed practitioner.

As a PSYPACT provider, Adam extends his traditional psychology services beyond Colorado to clients in select states nationwide. His extensive certifications include Mental Performance Consultant status with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, registered provider credentials with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and Board Certified Neurofeedback Clinician fellowship status.

Adam's approach seamlessly weaves together the precision of performance psychology, the compassion of clinical care, and the transformative potential of psychedelic therapy, creating a unique space where healing and growth can flourish.

  • Adam's journey into psilocybin-assisted therapy began approximately two years ago when approached by a professional athlete inquiring about microdosing applications. This inquiry sparked an exploration of the compelling research supporting psychedelic-assisted therapies dating back to the 1950s, revealing both clinical efficacy and performance enhancement potential. Since then, he has focused on supporting athletes and high performers in their pursuit of healing from mental illness, enhancing mental health, and improving performance through carefully administered psilocybin therapy.

Personal experiences with the medicine have provided additional insight into its transformative potential, informing a practice approach that honors both the profound healing possibilities and the importance of skilled, compassionate facilitation.

His commitment to continued professional development includes advanced training in psychedelic-assisted therapy alongside trauma-informed care, cultural considerations in treatment, and neurodiversity-affirming practices.

  • Dr. O'Neil specializes in serving children, adolescents, young adults, families, and high performers across various domains.

His 17 years of sport and performance psychology experience includes supporting three Team USA Paralympic teams (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games), consulting with Olympic-level athletes, working with international competitors from the World Surf League and CrossFit Games, and providing professional sports team consulting.

As an adjunct professor at the University of Denver's Sport and Performance Psychology program, he teaches courses and conducts research on athlete transitions and the impact of silent meditation retreats on team development, while also consulting with Fortune 500 companies on performance enhancement initiatives.
